Program Notes: Transgenerational trauma, or intergenerational trauma, is trauma passed on through a family member. Not only can someone experience trauma, but they can pass along the symptoms and resulting behaviors of that trauma to their children and so on. Many scholars and psychologists have researched transgenerational trauma, two of whom include Joy DeGruy (Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome) and Gita Arian Baack, PhD (The Inheritors: Moving Forward From Generational Trauma). Both of their works inform The Inheritors Overture (2020) and demonstrate how the past of our ancestors can influence our psyche and emotional well-being, and also how inherited trauma can transform into resilience.

Commissioned by the Raleigh Civic Chamber Orchestra, North Carolina State University, Peter Askim, Music Director with the support of the North Carolina Sustainability Fund and New Music USA.
